Artist Statement
I work mostly with oil pastels and occasionally with oil paint and colored pencils. The surface is stretched canvas to which I apply gesso appropriate for the media. My choice of materials allows me the flexibility of painting but with the tactile nature of drawing. The canvases are "gallery-wrapped" and I typically show them without framing. The finished pieces are varnished and don't require glass or matting.
For the past several years I've been interested in water imagery. I enjoy the subject in its own right, but I also like it as a vehicle for exploring drawing. The patterns and textures of the water surface, as well as the endless color variations of reflected light are wonderful sources for using color, line, and the calligraphy of drawing.
