Artist Statement
My watercolors aspire to capture scenes of everyday life and landscapes from a vast range of interesting and beautiful countries in which I've explored. My paintings tell the story of my travels and are a celebration of this earth and the places, events, and people that particularly inspire me. All of the countries where i paint have felt like home to me. Encountering exotic locales and diverse cultures through painting has allowed me to observe what is shared and common to much of humanity. Despite our cultural and political differences and no matter where we call home and what language we speak, we are united by our partnership with nature. The watercolors are a celebration of that connectivity. My painting trips are a pilgrimage of sorts, in the spirit of bygone days when painters travelled near and far in search of the extraordinary. I travel light, necessity dictating what goes into my one backpack. I use a compact wooden box that protects paper and paints from the elements, which also converts effortlessly into an easel. Traveling this way allows me to paint plein air (painting outdoors in natural light) a range of vistas that capture my imagination, no matter what challenges the terrain presents.
