Artist Statement
I am a visual artist specialized in printmaking, based in Ann Arbor, USA.
While I work in many media and styles, drawing always comes at the center of
the work. I have focused on minimalist lines and measured etchings throughout
my repertoire. The works draw on the tension between the mundane activities of
everyday life and the political sensibilities, between my young life in
village India and the world of fine art. I am fascinated by the intersection
of the personal and the political, presence and absence, the domestic and the
public. I received my training from the College of Art, New Delhi, where I
received BFA(2006) before completing MVA(2008) at M.S. University, Baroda.
I want my images to recollect or reflect the things that people might erase
from their minds. There is, therefore, always a sense of discomfort that drives
my work. I am interested in things that are hidden, and in distorting everyday
scenes to introduce elements that reference social instability. I try to
highlight those things which disrupt the everyday and the domestic. This can
range from the very smallest things ? the absence of a relative or the things
people eat ? to oppression and political violence.
