Artist Statement
It often starts with a drawing or journal entry. Next, drawings and ideas are transferred to a printing block. The block is carved, inks mixed, colors tested and the paper is carefully picked. The printing block is proofed, carved some more and then proofed again. At last the final state of the piece in revealed. The process is slow and along the way there is room for discovery. During each step, a conversation between the piece and the artist ensues and the image is refined to the most interesting state as elements are added or redacted and textures and colors are introduced. Lauren Charesse absolutely adores the element of discovery found in the printmaking process. Her studio practice offers a space to engage with her surroundings and digest thoughts and emotions, which manifest in her work as representations of the natural world, city landscapes and figurative imagery printed on paper.
