Artist Statement
My most recent work is mixed-media, using oil pastel and oil paint on stretched canvas or on board. My choice of materials allows me the flexibility of painting but with the tactile nature of drawing. I typically varnish the finished pieces and show them without matting or glass. The end result is painterly but with the oil pastels adding a graphic quality.
For the past several years I’ve been interested in water imagery. I enjoy the subject in its own right, but I also like it as a vehicle for exploring technique and process. Pattern in water, as well as the color variations of reflected light, are limitless sources for using color, line, and the calligraphy of drawing.
My work is successful when it functions as a recognizable image, but also when it’s interesting at a macro level. That’s where the exploration of pattern, texture and the evolution of a piece are most evident.
