Artist Statement
My recent work has been an investigation of the prevalence of color and pattern in recollections of spaces of comfort. Remnants of the physical qualities of home - the stripe of the old couch cushions, the exact hue of the front door - are imbued with traces of the daily rituals that once occurred. I am interested in the way memories mutate over time - some details become vividly exaggerated, and others fade out of focus until the memory is almost as inaccurate as an entirely imagined space. Drawing on psychological theories of environmental memory and place attachment, this series is an attempt to translate the remembered spaces of my past into a singular physical environment through layers upon layers of paint and fabric. This artist is participating as a member of our New Art, New Artist college student program.
