Artist Statement
Rita Kirkman has been using pastel since she was 11 years old. Since 2003 she has consistently won major awards in national and international competitions. She is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America, and a recipient of the IAPS Master Circle award.
?My work has evolved into an observation of sunlight and shadow, and recently I?ve been playing with more adventurous ways to portray light with color, value, and temperature. I began to use gold-toned primers under my pastels in 2012. I've been hooked on the incredible vibrations that cool colors can have over the warm primers, and I've learned how to create neutrals by layering compliments, and so much more!?
